Internet Explorer Versus Netscape

At cboss, our Technical Support Staff is often asked which browser is better. This is a good question; however, it's not one that's easily answered. The Web browser market is dominated by two companies: Microsoft and Netscape. (There are other Browsers available, but they are not commonly used.) Both are widely used and generally have the same features, so choosing between them is a matter of preference.

Both browsers excel and fall short in different areas. Below are some comparisons made using the 4.0 versions of both browsers.

What makes Web browsers different is their ability to handle the different elements used in Web design. In fact, some elements that Internet Explorer can handle are incompatible with Netscape and vice versa. This incompatibility, due in part to the battle to be the best, has caused some problems—while at the same time fueling the rapid advance of the industry as a whole.

While the gap has gotten smaller with later versions of Internet Explorer and Netscape, older versions of both browsers do not support some of the newer technologies.

Below is a table that lists several versions of the major browsers and what elements they support.
