What Is FTP

FTP stand for File Transfer Protocol. An FTP program is used to transfer files from a local system to a remote system. An example of this is transferring files from your Home Computer to our Web Server at cboss.

FTP Programs

There are multiple FTP programs available for use. The three most popular FTP programs to date are:

  • CuteFTP
  • WS_FTP
  • FTPVoyager

Each program is slightly different, yet they all function in the same basic manner. Which program you use is up to you. You can download trial versions of CuteFTP and WS_FTP at our Downloads Page.

Managing Your Personal Web Page

Step 1

One of the benefits of being a cboss subscriber is that, for free, users are allowed to post Web pages containing personal, non-commercial content on our servers for viewing on the Web. But before you can display your personal page, you must contact a cboss Technical Support person and have space created on our Web Server. You can reach a Technical Support person at 330.726.0429 (Youngstown) or at 330.544.6464 (Warren).

Once you have had space created on the cboss Web Server and you have designed your pages, it's time to transfer your files to the Web Server. To do this you can use an FTP program. You can download a trial version of CuteFTP or WS_FTP from the Downloads Page.

For this example, we will be using CuteFTP; however, you may use any FTP program with which you feel comfortable.

Using CuteFTP

Step 2

Open CuteFTP.

CuteFTP will open up to the FTP Site Manager screen. Click the Add Site button as shown above.

After clicking Add Site, the Add Host screen will appear. The correct information has been filled in on the example screen above. Your Internet access User ID and Password need to be inserted in the correct areas. Once all the information is added to this screen, click OK.

Step 3

Next, highlight the site we just added and hit connect. Two screens will appear one at a time. The first is the Directory Message. It should show that your current directory is now "/webhome." Click OK. The second screen is the Logon Message. This is where it verifies your User ID and Password. Click OK.

This is the main CuteFTP screen. Using this screen, you will transfer your web page from your computer to the web server. This screen is divided into two areas that will be important in the process of moving your files. Arrow 1 points to the left section of the screen. On this side you may view the files on your computer. Arrow two points to the right section of the screen where you view the files in your directory on the cboss Web Server. (Notice that at this point their are no files on the right section)

Step 4

First, you must find the files on your computer that you want to transfer. This is performed in the area marked by the arrow above. Once your files are visible in the screen on the left, you can begin transferring them to the right section.

To transfer your Web Page files to the server, select the accompanying image files in the left section. Hold down the Control key and click the left mouse button to select multiple files.

Once you have selected the files you would like to transfer, you can click the upload button marked by the arrow above or drag and drop in the left section of the screen. Once uploaded, you should be able to view the files now on the right section of the screen.

Step 5

To view your Web Page, you can enter its address in the address bar or location bar of your Web Browser. The address will be http://cboss.com/NAME, with NAME being the name of your personal directory on the cboss Web Server. You will be asked what you want to call your personal directory when you set it up with the cboss Technical Support person.

Example: If the name of your personal directory is "mypage" then your address would be "http://cboss.com/mypage/"
